In 1998, a small group of husky lovers formed Northern California Sled Dog Rescue (NorSled). Originally most were members of Siberian Husky Rescue and Referral of CA, and many are still active in this organization. However, the NorSledders wanted to expand rescue to include dogs that were mixes of the Nordic breeds, not just purebreds. Their goals were not replacing existing rescue groups but:
1.Helping a population of dogs that did not have a rescue network, and
2.Expanding into geographic regions where there was no Nordic purebred breed rescue.
We have a strong rapport with many fellow rescue groups and shelters who are also working to improve adoptions in Northern California. Today NorSled coordinates efforts with more than 10 other rescue groups including Tony LaRussa’s ARF, Malamute rescue (MUSH), Husky Rescue (SHRRCA and BASH), Samoyed Rescue (SFSR), and German Shepherd Rescue.
NorSled hosts adoption fairs in three counties and attend events in even more. We have participated in ARF’s Animals on Broadway, Berkeley East Bay Humane Society’s Bay to Barkers, Sports Basement’s Animal Extravaganza. In addition, with four other rescue organizations NorSled hosts the annual Fun Match in Danville, CA each June. And in 2011, NorSled hosted the only timed carting race in Northern California- So MUSH Fun – that served as a NorSled fundraiser. NorSled conducts programs at multiple schools in Northern California, educating students about sled dogs in particular and the Iditarod.800-471-5822
